You might think this is an old woman, but in truth it was a young and very hip Asian girl. There was nothing stopping me from taking a few shots of her amazing outfit. Isn't it great? I was amazed at how she could walk in those shoes there. This was at 'the point', one of the locations from the workshop. I was so close to asking this girl to model for me, but was too shy. So I was stealth and took a couple photo's without asking. creepy, I know.

Hukilau Cafe

It's taking longer than I had hoped to get my film processed, so in the meantime I'll post photo's from around the island starting at Hukilau Cafe. This is a great place for breakfast and in walking distance of where we stayed. I even tried the spam n' eggs (a local favorite), and it was surprisingly tasty.

Just to keep you interested while I wait for my film to process from the workshop, here are some snap shots we took from the LOST set (the other's village) that we found while in Hawaii. Maybe this isn't that cool, but we had fun. There was a bunch of people there "scouting" and filming stuff, so we tried to stay out of their way. But then David did this:

and someone spotted what amazing acting potential he had and asked him to be an extra* in the film. I was pretty jealous. Then they asked him to sit in a chair and look bored:

well, it's been an amazing 10 days.

The workshop was wonderful and so inspiring.

I have about 30 rolls of film to develop and over 600 raw files to edit. Also, somewhat of a tan. yes.
I have a lot of changes to make with the blog and will keep you updated soon. I'll also post photo's from the workshop as soon as I get my film back! I really am giddy about it. nerdy, I know.

Also, seeing Violet was the best present to come home to!

we are going to Hawaii and leaving our sweet little girl behind.

this is how I feel:

I know I'm probably more sad than her, but it breaks my heart just thinking about it. (although she'll be in good hands, I assure you... I'm still torn). I haven't been away from her for more than one night since she was born, so this will definitely be a challenge. I admit though, I'm looking forward to a little "r and r" and time with my honey on the sunny beaches of O'ahu. Our main motive in going was this, which I'm pretty excited about.

these were taken somewhere off the shores of Alaska a few years back. All were taken with an older 35mm film camera but the colors and sharpness surprised me {although the scans don't do them justice}. I found them while digging through some boxes last night.

film vs. digital

Although I do use digital {a lot}, I still love film and the dimension and tangible qualities that it has. There's nothing like the anticipation of waiting to get your prints back, as apposed to immediate gratification {or not}. That's why I am going to Hawaii for this, not only because I think it will be super helpful, informative and refreshing-- but because the idea of it makes me giddy. Yep, I'm a nerd. Also, I can't pass up the opportunity to learn from such a successful, and increasingly popular Utah based photographer who has his lighting down to perfection. And an excuse to take a trip to Hawaii isn't too shabby either.

So, who can guess which is which? One set is digital, the other film:

Yes, I enjoy posting photos of my lovely little daughter violet and I don't think that will be changing any time soon. She has been such a joy in our lives and is getting funner every day. She pulls all sorts of faces now that make us laugh, and as you can see has constant drool on her chin. At 8 months now she is almost crawling, sticks anything and everything into her mouth, and says "ba ba ba" a lot. Sometimes I wonder how I got so lucky, and wonder how she got so lucky to be blessed with those beautiful blue eyes. Where did she get them anyway??

Since she finds random junk around the house more entertaining and interesting than actual toys, it wasn't very hard to please her this year...

wow, what a week it's been.

In one week we have:
1. become homeowners... phew.
2. packed up all our valuables and moved to a new little city where there's a lot more room and a view!
3. realized how much I hate moving... once again.
4. purchased and decorated a Christmas tree.

So now you know why I haven't posted in over a week. I just got internet today and quickly realized how unproductive I can be with it here... and just a few snaps of violet being so patient as I unpack all week.

wide open spaces

Recently we took a drive way out west where the salt lies flat, wide and far as the eye can see.

It was freezing, but so so beautiful. And since I missed out on this and this, I felt the need to make a trip out myself before winter freezes everything over (wait, that might have happened already). Thanks you two for the inspirations. We are pretty lucky to live so close to a landscape so rare.

oh... we also discovered that Wendover isn't all that the billboards talk it up to be. hmm.

I just got this roll of film back from this bridal session. I can't get over the colors and mood of the entire shoot. Their dresses and style seemed to blend right into the environment (I was lucky). This probably won't be the last you see of these girls either. I haven't even edited the entire shoot yet...

6 months and sittin' pretty

Violet is 6 months old as of last Thursday.

I love being this girl's mom and can't believe how fast time has flown. She can sit up on her own now, and has started eating foods like squash and carrots. (not so fond of the squash, but we're working on it). She still prefers her bottle over anything. She recently started sleeping more at night to give us a break and we're in heaven (9-10 hours!)-- believe me that's amazing for this girl. I hope I don't jinx it.

Here's a couple photos I like. The first one was taken right on her 6 month half birthday. The second is older, but always liked it so thought I'd share.

(I liked what david said about the bottom photo when we were looking at it the other night... "if that doesn't make someone want to be a dad, I don't know what would" -- david :)

**Update~ I did jinx violet's nice sleeping pattern... cause she stopped doing that for us. So, don't feel too bad kim & fergie! :(

I had the opportunity to shoot these cute sister's bridals together over the weekend. Both of their dresses were made by their mother...SO neat. This is kind of a sneak peak because I haven't gone through any of them yet, just noticed a few I liked so thought I'd share. I shot both of these girl's weddings over a year ago, and they still look amazing in their dresses...

we went up Alpine Loop the other weekend and stopped by Cascade Springs. This place is pretty neat... everything was almost dead and looked ready for winter except for a few straggling leaves and moss. The landscape was pretty amazing too because there was a fire up there a couple years ago -- which charred everything in it's path.

I found this site a couple years back and haven't forgotten how spooky it was/is. I thought it would be appropriate to share, being that it's Halloween. The site is best viewed if you have the volume up on your computer because there's eerie music that plays. Also, when you roll your mouse over some of the images, stuff happens that is spooky too. They were all taken in England over the period of 4 seasons...

we went to st. george this weekend... it was hot but nice to get out and relax. we went on a drive to the 'joshua tree forest'-- only to find that a vast majority of it was burned to a crisp. It was too hot to take too many pictures, but this one stood alone and I liked it. We also stopped by a creepy graveyard on the way home, I don't know why old graveyards are so fascinating.

I recently went through some old boxes of college work I've done. What a project-- I have so much junk. I've been trying to bring some of my work from the dead and hopefully showcase some of it on my site-- that we're using every spare minute to redesign.

I went through old folders, negatives, and loads of photography assignments I've done in the past. It brought back a weird nostalgic feeling to re-read some of them... remembering the long hours I spent trying to fulfill them. Hours and hours of lectures, discussions, and critiques only to come up with what? I always told myself in college that there are two types of photography that I didn't want to do: weddings, and family portraits. Oops, looks like I failed that one! Okay, I guess I don't mean 'failed', because it has been a creative outlet for me... but I often think what my college professor would think if she saw me now. funny.

Anyway, some snippets of a contact sheet caught my eye as well... it looks as though I've had a fondness for blue skies and farm animals for a while.

It's' always fun when you find an old roll of film not knowing where it came from... like this roll I recently developed. Come to find out that it's from a trip we took over a year ago to southern Utah, taken with my holga camera. This camera never fails to impress me with it's simplicity and unpredictability. The imperfections are what I love about it.

oh, and those little black dots in the distance on the top picture are buffalo! sweeet.

First off, I apologize for how gross this is... I really do. But I had to post these pictures because this is what my life is like as a new mom-- at times. I could just keep posting lovely pictures of her, in fact I probably will, but I couldn't pass up this opportunity to show how funny this was. I took these myself seconds after she puked up all over me. I loved her face afterwards, like she was telling me "I told ya so, mom".

Yesterday was a very special day for our little Violet.

David gave her the most beautiful blessing, and she wore the most beautiful dress that my mom made with her own two hands (thanks mom). I feel so lucky, and blessed as well. The day couldn't have gone any smoother and Violet was so sweet all day long.

This photo was taken 3 seconds after the blessing was finished, she was so alert and looking around at everyone...

I had to take Violet in today to get her shots, and she wasn't the only one who ended up in tears... it broke my heart to see her happy little face turn frantic!

Now that it's over she's sleeping the day away. I just had to share my favorite new photo of her sleeping so peacefully.

Last night David and I were privileged to attend the Oakley rodeo with my family. It was your classic American rodeo featuring all the cowboys and cowgirls you could ask for, accompanied by a lot of red, white and blue. Oh, and fireworks to top off the night!

Violet was oblivious to it all, but sure enjoyed the fireworks show... her eyes were wide open.

I had to show off this baby quilt that my mom and I made for Violet.. well mostly my mom. She's so good at this stuff, I feel really lucky. Thanks mom. I think Violet will really like it someday.

David and I spend the last couple days painting this cradle that has been in his family for years. I feel privilaged to use it now, as David slept in it as a baby along with all his siblings and the grandchildren. I think the pale yellow turned out pretty dang cute. Now all we need is the baby...

David and I are trying to come up with ideas for decorating our apartment. We took a lot of photos of spring things like dandelions and flowers (maybe for the baby room?). We'll see.
David took this picture of me yesterday on a walk we took. I can't believe how big I have gotten! I'm counting down the days. three more weeks. Or more...or less...
Sunday we took a long drive. I loved the clouds and blue sky...and the contrast of the green grass. I wish my old bunny lived here.

Ode to Zoey

The signs of Easter are here, and what better way to celebrate than to buy a little fluffy bunny? David got me this angora bunny shortly after we got married around Easter time. She started out small and cuddly and grew up to be the size of a small dog. Her name was Zoey and she stayed with us for a good year...I think. Below and left is a picture of her right after we got her, and on the right is a picture of her flying through the air. Yep, that picture is not photoshopped. And yes, we are done getting pets and not keeping them...

Thank you Ali for organizing this photo shoot! I'm pretty sure it made my weekend. Taking pictures involving HUGE colorful balloons beats taking pictures of weddings any day. Can we do this again?...soon?
